The Argan tree belongs to the Sapotaceae family and is a native tree of Morocco. Its fruit is yellow-brown when ripe whose Arabic names is “affiache”.
It’s a streamlined oval drupe (false nut) and is about 30 mm long. It contains an exceptionally hard nut which houses two or three kernels. The largest concentration of argan trees is in Morocco’s Souss region, where they cover nearly 2 million acres of land. Argan has been used for centuries by Berber women for its cosmetic properties and its honey-coloured oil is rich in Omega-6 fatty acids and Tocopherols (Vitamin E). Argan oil is rich in E vitamins, is an excellent antioxidant – necessary for fighting the aging process – and its low saponification value gives it restorative properties.
